You will be embarking on an exhilarating road journey from Sydney to Jindabyne/Thredbo, the gateway to Australia’s highest peak, Mount Kosciuszko. Travelling south, you will pass through picturesque landscapes and charming towns. In Jindabyne, a serene lakeside town, cosy accommodation, such as a lakeside cabin or a local inn, will be planned already. You will be resting in the later evening to experience the chairlift towards the summit.
Thredbo is 35 km from Jindabyne & takes 30 min by road.
Set out early from your Jindabyne or Thredbo accommodation for an adventure-packed day. Drive from Jindabyne to Thredbo (or start from Thredbo). Embark your journey by taking the Kosciuszko Express chairlift from the village to Eagles Nest, which is approximately 1,920 metres above sea level.
This initial part of the ascent provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking alpine scenery as the chairlift gracefully ascends through the snow gums and offers magnificent vistas of the surrounding valleys.
From Eagles Nest, the trek officially begins, and hikers make their way through an array of diverse landscapes. The route follows a well-marked path, descending slightly to reach the shimmering Snowy River, where footbridges facilitate the crossing of this pristine watercourse. The trail then gradually ascends, leading through subalpine woodlands, meadows adorned with colourful wildflowers in the warmer months, and patches of snow in the winter.
As you continue, you’ll reach the iconic Charlotte Pass, which is the starting point for the Main Range Track, the primary path leading to Mount Kosciuszko’s summit. From Charlotte Pass, the track ascends through a series of rolling hills, providing hikers with sweeping vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys. You’ll pass by Seaman’s Hut, a historic alpine refuge, and then arrive at Rawson Pass, which is a pivotal junction on the route.
There’s a big “2100 metres” sign at Rawsons Pass, which is the last rest area with toilets. The hardest portion of the trail is just 1.5 km more to the summit from there.You’ll also notice that the surface of the last 1.5 km is radically different, and snow regularly covers the track, though it is mostly passable all-year (though the track gems quite some centimetres below the snow). As you slowly wind your way around the mountain, you’ll slowly notice the summit, and the trig marker. Not long after, you’ll be at the summit of Mount Kosciuszko.You have officially climbed one of the Seven Summits after reaching the trig marker, which is the highest point on the Australian mainland.
You would get back at Thredbo Top Station for lunch before having to use the chairlift to descend once more. Eagles Nest Restaurant, Australia’s highest restaurant (and the only one in the vicinity before you have to descend), might be worth a visit if you’re an avid statistics buff and really want to eat lunch.
