Goecha La is a mountain pass at 16,207 feet in West Sikkim (La= pass) but it is no longer allowed to trek till the actual pass. The trekking trail is through Kanchenjunga National Park & goes till View Point 1, which is at 15,100 feet. You stand close to the south-west face of Mt. Kanchenjunga at this point. Despite inaccessibility to the actual Goecha La pass, Goecha La trek still offers an amazing view of Mt. Kanchenjunga from View Point 1 & Singalila range from Dzongri top. Goecha La trail is among the oldest trails in India but it gained fame during the Nepalese Civil War (1996- 2006). During this period the trekkers started looking for the alternative trekking trails in India as the treks in Nepal were restricted. Goecha La trail emerged as the most promising one with not only the closest view to Kanchenjunga (the third highest peak in the world) but 14 other big summits too.

Highlight of Goecha La trek:

  • Sunrise on the Kanchenjunga Range from View Point 1 & Dzongri top
  • Rhododendrons in April and May
  • Samiti Lake with reflection of Mt Pandim
  • Wildlife lovers: Yellow-throated marten, Pika, Mountain weasel, and Himalayan Blue Sheep can be spotted.
  • Bird-watchers treat: At lower altitude you can spot different species of Bulbul, Woodpecker, Barbet, Sunbird, Thrush, Tree creeper and Tits. At the mid altitude Flycatchers, Fulvetta, Magpie, Wren babblers, Laughing thrushes are located. On higher altitudes look for Finches, Accentors, and Grandala. Keep an eye around bushes before reaching Dzongri for Blood pheasants, which are the state bird of Sikkim.
What to expect in the two seasons of Goecha La trek:

Goecha La Spring Trek :

  • March-May
  • Attraction: Rhododendrons in the shades of pink to red, white to yellow linning your trail from Bakhim. The rhododendron forest becomes denser as you approach Tshoka. Then there is the Rhododendron belt from Tshoka till Phedang, where you will be royally treated as you walk over the carpet of colourful petals laid by the mother nature.
  • Winter starts to take leave from the slopes. There might be snow patches at the altitude of more than 10,000 feet.
  • Day time are pleasant & nights are chilly especially in higher campsite like Lamuney
  • There might be chances of snowfall & should remain prepared for the same.

Goecha La Autumn Trek :

  • September end-November
  • The landscape gets dominated by dark, mossy forest with clear sky.
  • Autumn is like winter minus snow
  • It is good season for the night photographers desiring to capture starry night in their camera.
